That is the secret of the eyes of Andrew Rubley's Christ ...
By Henri J.M. Nouwen
“To see Christ is to see God and all of humanity. This mystery has evoked in me a burning desire to see the face of Jesus. Countless images have been created but when I saw Andrew Rublev’s icon of Christ, I saw what I had never seen before and felt what I had never felt before. I knew immediately that my eyes had been blessed in a very special way. Andrew Rublev painted his icon of Christ at the beginning of the fifteenth century.
This face to face experience leads us to see God and live! As we try to fix our eyes on the eyes of Jesus we know that we are seeing the eyes of God. What greater desire is there in the human heart than to see God?
The eyes of Rublev’s Christ are the eyes of the Son of Man and the Son of God described in the book of Revelation. They are the eyes of one who is ‘Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, one in being with the Father… through whom all things were made.’ (Nicene Creed)
The same eyes which see into the heart of God saw the suffering hearts of God’s people and wept. These eyes, which burn like flames of fire penetrating God’s own interiority, also hold oceans of tears for the human sorrow of all times and all places. That is the secret of the eyes of Andrew Rublev’s Christ.”
“To have seen me is to have seen the Father. Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?” John 14 : 8
